Registered Piano Technician Members

A Registered Piano Technician (RPT) has passed a series of rigorous examinations on the maintenance, repair, and tuning of pianos.  Only RPTs are authorized by The Piano Technicians Guild to display the logo containing the words “Registered Piano Technician”.

Eric Carlson, RPT began tuning pianos in 1981 at the age of 16. In 1992, he became a Registered Piano Technician. In addition to providing high-level service on pianos, Eric and his wife, Rachel, own and operate Artistic Pianos LLC, which sells quality pre-owned pianos by Yamaha, Kawai, and others.
Eric's services include: Fine Tuning, Action Regulating and Restoration, Repairs, Re-Stringing, Pre- purchase Evaluations, Estimates, and Appraisals.
Other services/products offered by Artistic Piano Service are: Dampp-Chaser Piano Livesaver System Installations (for maintaining proper humidity), Piano Lamps, Piano Dollies, Protective Covers, and Cory Keyboard Polishes and Cleaners.
Eric Carlson (ASCAP) is also an accomplished pianist/composer, playing regularly with Racine Symphony Orchestra, and is Parish Musician at St. John's Lutheran Church (LCMS) in North Prairie, WI.

Since 1974 Timothy Dixon, RPT has been offering the highest quality tuning, repairing, and restoration of grand pianos. He has extensive experience on pianos in the home and in the concert hall and has taught these skills at seminars at both local and national venues. Included in the restoration services are repair or replacement of soundboards, bridges, pinblocks, actions and keyboards. Also available are case repair and refinishing work. This attention to detail restores the pianos to “better than new” condition.

​Larry McDonald, RPT is the co-owner of Hartland Piano, featuring both Kawai and Yamaha grand, upright, and hybrid pianos.  Larry and his wife, Ellen McDonald, have been serving the Milwaukee and Waukesha market since 1975.  They have won the Top 100 Dealers Award in the United States several times (out of 8000 music dealers.)  They also own and operate the Waukesha County Conservatory of Music, serving 2300 students weekly. Larry is a graduate of Yamaha’s Concert Piano Performance School in Buena Park, California, and holds a Doctorate in Music from UW-Madison.

Jonathan Moberg, RPT is the owner of Moberg Piano Sales & Service, the authorized dealership for Hailun Pianos. In addition to new and used pianos Jonathan has two harpsichords available for concert rental. Jonathan started working on Pianos in 1970 at a local dealership under the supervision and instruction of  third generation piano technician, Dick Kingsbury. In 1976 Jonathan went into business on his own opening Moberg Piano Sales & Service and worked out  of his newly acquired storefront in Milwaukee's Riverwest Neighborhood. In addition to his tuning and rebuilding customers, he has worked for several production companies including Daydream, Stardate, Landmark, Alpine Valley and Pabst Theatre.  He has tuned for many visiting artists--from Abba to Zappa. Since 1983 he has worked part time for the UWM Music Department as Senior Instrumentation Specialist. From 1985 to 2016 he maintained the harpsichord for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. From 1990 until 2016 he was the primary Piano Technician for the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. He has also worked with many performing arts organizations including Early Music Now, Florentine Opera, Present Music and the MSO. Jonathan has been an active Registered Piano Technician with the Piano Technicians Guild since 1974.

Mike Spalding RPT took up piano work full time in 2000, following first career in machine design engineering and project management.  Mike gives credit for his successful career change to his engineering background, hobby interests in music, woodworking, and lutherie (guitars), and the support of the PTG -Milwaukee Chapter.  
Services:  

Michael is now semi-retired:  still rebuilding/restoring grand pianos, but only tuning and servicing those pianos which he has rebuilt.
